What is an AI image enhancer?
An image enhancer improves how a picture looks without changing what it shows: it reduces noise (the grain in dark or high-ISO photos), sharpens soft edges, lifts flat contrast and can make muted colours a little richer. Auro Tools combines proven computer-vision techniques and, for upscaling, a neural-network super-resolution model when it is available on the server.
What is AI image upscaling?
Upscaling makes an image larger, for example 1280 × 720 to 2560 × 1440. A plain resize just stretches the pixels, which looks blocky or blurry. Super-resolution methods estimate what the extra pixels should look like from the surrounding image, so edges and lines stay cleaner. It cannot bring back detail that was never captured, so it works best on modest enlargements.
What is the difference between image enhancement and upscaling?
Enhancement changes quality at the same size: less noise, more clarity, better contrast. Upscaling changes the size: more pixels. They solve different problems, which is why the tool lets you do either or both. If you're unsure, Smart Enhance measures your image and picks sensible settings for you.
When should you upscale an image?
Upscale when an image is too small for where you want to use it: a small logo or product photo that needs to fill a larger space, an old low-resolution photo you want to print, or a web image that looks soft on a high-density screen. Don't upscale an image that is already large enough; you will only get a bigger file.
How does AI image enhancement work?
The enhancer measures noise, sharpness, contrast and colour in your image. It then applies non-local-means noise reduction, an unsharp mask for edge detail, adaptive contrast (CLAHE) and a gentle saturation lift, each at a strength that matches your choice or the measurements. If you upscale, the image is enlarged with FSRCNN super-resolution when available, or high-quality Lanczos resampling otherwise, and the result says which one ran.
How much can I upscale an image?
You can upscale 2× or 4× where your plan and the image size allow it. Free accounts can upscale 2× up to 16 megapixels of output; paid plans can go to 4× and up to 72 megapixels, and no result can exceed 16,384 pixels on a side. Options that would exceed a limit are shown as unavailable, with the reason.
AI upscaling vs. traditional resizing
Traditional resizing (bilinear, bicubic) averages nearby pixels, which softens edges as the image grows. Lanczos resampling is a sharper classical method. Learned super-resolution can keep lines and textures crisper still, but it can also smooth away very fine texture. For photos, moderate factors and a light touch usually look most natural.
How to improve low-resolution images
Start from the best original you have, since re-saving a compressed copy loses more detail. Reduce noise first, then upscale by the smallest factor you need, then sharpen lightly. Avoid stacking several strong enhancements: results that look natural at 100% zoom usually look better in print and on screens too.
