About JPG to PNG
Every time a JPG is edited and saved again it loses a little more detail. A PNG does not, which is why people convert a photo before a long editing session. Upload the JPG, press one button and the decoded pixels are written out as a PNG with the same width and height. There are no settings for this pair. Expect a bigger file, and note that the conversion cannot bring back detail the JPG already discarded.
Features
- JPG or JPEG input of up to 60 MB
- Lossless PNG output, so there is no quality slider to set
- Applies the photo's rotation flag so portraits come out upright
- Shows the new file size and a larger-than-original badge when the PNG grows
- Keeps your original file name and swaps the extension to .png
Limitations
- JPG compression artifacts are copied into the PNG, and the PNG is usually larger than the JPG.
- A JPG has no transparent pixels, so the PNG comes out fully opaque.
- Pictures over 16384 px on a side or 100 megapixels in total are rejected at upload.
- Downloading the PNG needs a free account; without one you see a reduced-size preview.
How it works
- Drop a JPG or JPEG file onto the upload area, or browse for it.
- Select Convert to PNG. There is no quality slider because PNG output is lossless.
- Compare the original and the PNG in the preview and read the size change under Result.
- Press Download to save the PNG, which keeps your file name with a .png extension.
Frequently asked questions
- No. The PNG holds exactly the pixels the JPG decodes to, blockiness and blur included. What you gain is protection from further loss: you can edit and save the PNG repeatedly without the JPG recompression step.
- JPG throws away detail to stay small, while PNG keeps every pixel. The result panel shows the exact change. If size matters more than a lossless copy, convert to WebP instead, or keep the JPG.
- Yes. A rotation flag in the JPG is applied to the pixels before saving, so a portrait photo is not turned sideways. The EXIF block itself, with camera and location tags, is not copied to the PNG.
- No. It only changes the container, so every pixel stays opaque. To cut out a subject you need a background remover, and then save the result as PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
- The file is sent to our server for conversion. A result made while signed out expires after 24 hours and is deleted automatically; for signed-in accounts the retention depends on the plan.
