About PNG to WebP
Logos, icons and cut-out product shots are the usual reason to reach for PNG, and they are also the files where losing the see-through background would hurt. This conversion keeps the alpha channel, so a transparent PNG gives a transparent WebP, while an opaque one stays opaque. You control one setting, quality, and the result panel shows how the new size compares with the PNG you started with.
Features
- Transparent areas stay transparent in the WebP
- Quality set with a slider from 10 to 100, default 90
- Accepts PNG files up to 60 MB
- No background color to choose, because nothing is flattened
- Side by side or slider comparison with the original
Limitations
- The WebP is lossy, never lossless, so fine detail and sharp text edges can soften at lower quality settings.
- For small flat graphics the WebP can come out larger than the PNG; the size badge tells you when it does.
- Uploads over 60 MB, or over 16384 px on a side or 100 megapixels in total, are rejected.
- Downloading needs a free account; guests see a reduced-size preview.
How it works
- Drop a PNG file onto the upload area, or browse for it.
- Set the quality slider; it starts at 90.
- Select Convert to WEBP.
- Compare the original and the WebP, including the size change and the pixel dimensions.
- Press Download to save the WebP once you are happy with it.
Frequently asked questions
- Yes. If the PNG has an alpha channel the WebP is written with one too, so cut-outs keep their see-through areas. A PNG with no transparency is saved as an opaque WebP.
- No. The tool encodes lossy WebP and does not request the lossless mode, even when the slider is at its maximum. If you need an exact pixel copy, keep the PNG.
- That control only appears when the output is JPG, because JPG cannot hold transparency. WebP can, so nothing needs to be filled in and the picker is hidden for this pair.
- Up to a point. Files can be 60 MB, but the picture may not exceed 16384 px on a side or 100 megapixels in total. The page checks this when you add the file and tells you before anything is sent.
