About Repair PDF
A PDF that stops opening is often damaged in its bookkeeping rather than its content: a cross-reference table pointing to the wrong places, or an object stream that is slightly malformed. This tool reads the file with the parsing rules relaxed, does not stop at objects it cannot parse, and saves what it understood as a new file with a fresh internal structure. Content that is genuinely missing cannot be brought back.
Features
- Lenient re-read that does not stop at the first invalid object
- Writes a fresh cross-reference structure when saving
- Says plainly when a file is too damaged to rebuild
- Technical parser message kept behind a Show details link
Limitations
- It cannot recover data that is genuinely missing, so a repaired file can still have blank or lost content.
- A file whose structure cannot be read at all is reported as too badly damaged, not partly rescued.
- No preview is shown, so open the downloaded file yourself to confirm the pages are intact.
- Files over 50 MB are refused, and saving repaired.pdf needs a free account.
How it works
- Add the PDF that will not open properly.
- Read the What this fixes note, then select Repair PDF.
- If the file is too damaged, an error appears with a Show details link for the technical message.
- Download repaired.pdf and open it to check that the pages are all there.
Example input
A PDF that opens with an error like "failed to parse" or won't open in some viewersFrequently asked questions
- It can when the damage is structural, such as broken cross-reference tables or malformed object streams. If the contents themselves are gone, nothing in the file can restore them and the tool reports that the file is too badly damaged.
- It is the raw message from the PDF parser, tucked behind a Show details link because it talks about offsets and objects. You do not need it to use the tool, but it helps if you ask someone to look at the file.
- The tool re-saves the document structure rather than redrawing pages, so text and images are written back as they were read. Anything the parser could not read cannot be written back, which is why checking the result matters.
- No upload is involved. A PDF library inside the page does the re-reading and re-saving, and the repaired copy sits in memory until you download it. Download is the step that asks guests to sign in.
