About Add Watermark
A draft that circulates without a stamp is easily mistaken for the final version. Type the wording, such as DRAFT or a client name, set how opaque and how large it should be, and the tool lays that text across the middle of every page at a 45 degree angle. Latin text uses the built-in bold Helvetica, while Cyrillic, Arabic or CJK text is drawn with your browser's fonts and placed as an image.
Features
- Diagonal text across the middle of every page
- Opacity from 5% to 80% in steps of 5
- Font size from 16 to 96 points
- Cyrillic, Arabic and CJK text drawn with browser fonts
- Long text is scaled down to fit within the page
Limitations
- Text only: there is no image or logo watermark, and position, angle and color are fixed.
- The mark is drawn on top of the page content, so keep the opacity low enough that the page stays readable.
- Text in other scripts is embedded as a picture of the words, so it cannot be selected or searched in the PDF.
- Files up to 50 MB are accepted, and saving watermarked.pdf needs a free account.
How it works
- Add the PDF and wait for its page count to appear.
- Type the Watermark text; it starts as CONFIDENTIAL.
- Set Opacity and Font size with the sliders; their current values are shown beside them.
- Select Add Watermark, then download watermarked.pdf.
Frequently asked questions
- No, only text is supported. You can change the wording, opacity and size, but the placement in the center of the page and the diagonal angle are fixed for every page.
- Yes. Accented Latin letters use the built-in font. Anything outside that set, such as Cyrillic, Arabic or CJK characters, is drawn by your browser into an image and placed on the page, so it displays correctly but cannot be selected.
- No. When the text would be wider than 85% of the page diagonal, it is scaled down to fit, so a long phrase ends up smaller than the font size you chose.
- Possibly. It is added as ordinary page content, not a locked layer, so a person with a PDF editor may be able to move or cover it. Treat it as a label rather than security, and use the protect tool to restrict access.
