About PDF to Markdown
Notes, wikis and README files want Markdown, but a PDF only stores positioned characters. This tool rebuilds the structure it can see: short lines set larger than the body text become headings, text in bold or italic fonts keeps its emphasis, and bullet symbols turn into list items. Conversion runs the moment you choose a file, and the result lands in an editable preview that you can correct before copying or saving the .md file.
Features
- Short, larger lines become #, ## or ### headings by font size
- Bold and italic carried over from the PDF's fonts
- Bullet symbols turned into - list items
- Editable Markdown preview with a formatting toolbar
- Copy Markdown or save a .md file
Limitations
- Structure is guessed from font sizes and spacing, so headings, lists and paragraph breaks can be misjudged. Check the result before publishing it.
- There is no table detection, so a table comes out as ordinary text lines.
- A scanned PDF has no text to convert; read it with the OCR tool first.
- Files up to 50 MB are accepted, and saving the .md file needs a free account, though copying does not.
How it works
- Drop a PDF onto the upload area; conversion starts as soon as it loads.
- Wait for the Converting line to finish; the page count appears under the file name.
- Read the Markdown in the editable preview and fix headings or lists with the toolbar.
- Select Copy Markdown, or Download .md to save a file named after the PDF.
Frequently asked questions
- It finds the most common text size and treats that as body text. Short lines set noticeably larger become headings, and the bigger the difference, the higher the level, from ### up to #. Long lines always stay ordinary paragraphs.
- Lines starting with a bullet symbol such as a dot or square become list items beginning with -, and neighboring ones form one list. Lines that already start with - or a number and a period are kept as list markers. Unusual symbols may arrive as plain paragraphs.
- Yes. The file is saved from what is in the editable preview, so headings you promote, lines you delete and typos you fix there all end up in the download.
- For files with more than one page, a marker line is inserted before each page's content so you can see where pages break. Delete them in the editor if you want continuous text.
- No. The text is read by pdf.js in your browser and the Markdown is generated in the page. The worker script comes from this site's own domain, and the account step only applies to saving the file.
