What is happening to your prompts?
Over the last 48 hours, beginning November 2, 2026, developers noticed a sudden AI image generation quality drop. Images coming out of ChatGPT and DALL-E 3 are suddenly filled with smudges, artifacts, and blurriness.
According to reports on the OpenAI Developer Community, models are failing to follow prompt instructions and outputting incorrect colors. While we've seen minor fluctuations over the last year, users are calling this the worst and longest degradation by far.
Why this AI image generation quality drop is happening
The root cause appears to be a shift toward speed and cost efficiency. Users on the OpenAI Developer Community suggest the DALL-E 3 degradation might stem from a quiet reduction in processing steps to save compute resources.

This aligns with broader industry trends. Google DeepMind recently pushed its Nano Banana 2 Lite model, which prioritizes speed and cost-efficiency to generate an image in just four seconds. Midjourney also introduced a Draft mode for its V8.1 model, producing 24 lower-resolution images for half the standard fast hours.
As providers try to manage expensive infrastructure, the trade-off is often fidelity. If you're tracking these API expenses, you can use our LLM Cost Calculator to see how different models impact your budget. We've seen similar trade-offs discussed in our coverage of AI in software development management.
Heavyweight models are still an option
The focus on cheaper models doesn't mean high-quality generation is dead. Providers are simply splitting their offerings into tiers. According to Google DeepMind, their Nano Banana Pro model remains specifically designed for professional asset production requiring advanced reasoning and high-fidelity text.
Midjourney's default V8.1 model was built to be smarter and better at rendering text, and their recent V8.2 edit model specifically targeted image quality improvements. Meanwhile, Stability AI released Stable Diffusion XL 0.9 as a major upgrade for composition precision.
Stability AI also collaborated with NVIDIA to optimize Stable Diffusion 3.5 models with TensorRT. According to their release notes, this cuts memory usage by 40 percent on RTX GPUs while doubling performance, proving that efficiency doesn't always have to destroy image quality.
Fixing your current image assets
Until the major platforms stabilize their default outputs, you need a way to handle the artifacts in your daily workflow. Rerolling the same prompt repeatedly just wastes time and API credits.
Instead, generate your base concept and then post-process the result to remove the blurriness and smudges. You can run the flawed outputs through an AI image enhancer and upscaler to restore lost details and sharpen the final image. Adapting to these provider updates means taking more control over the final polish yourself.
